Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh)
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan is young and leading a young team in the World Cup. A good batsman who can stay at the crease during demanding situations, Shakib will be hoping to prove his mettle in the mega tournament.
Misbah-ul-Haq or Shahid Afridi (Pakistan)
It's either going to be Misbah-ul-Haq (right) or it will be Shahid Afridi (centre) who will lead Pakistan at the World Cup.
Misbah led Pakistan's Test team against South Africa and New Zealand. The team drew the series against the Proteas but won 1-0 against the Kiwis. That makes him a tough contender, but he will be Afridi's deputy in the six-match ODI series against the Kiwis starting on Saturday.
Ricky Ponting (Australia)
An illustrious batsman and an illustrious skipper as well. But of late, Ricky Ponting's team does not seem to be supporting his cause. Ponting is aiming to retain the World Cup, but it will be a tough task considering the poor form of his players.
Daniel Vettori (New Zealand)
Daniel Vettori is known to be a thinking captain and will need to keep his thinking cap on during the World Cup. A fine left-arm spinner, Vettori has even shared the burden of batting when the chips are down. But he has confirmed that he would be stepping down from captaincy after the World Cup.
Andrew Strauss (England)
A good team and their Ashes exploits have left England even more battle hardened. Skipper Andrew Strauss is in form and will be looking to carry on the momentum during the World Cup.
Graeme Smith (South Africa)
South Africa have hit a purple patch and will be hoping to carry on the good form. Skipper Graeme Smith too found his lost form during the ODIs against India. He is known to lead from the front and deliver the goods when the chips are down.
Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)
If India are the favourites for the title, Sri Lanka come a close second. Like India, the Lankans too have an impressive batting and bowling arsenal and are being captained by a wicketkeeper batsman. Captain Kumar Sangakkara is in good nick and will be looking to capitalise on it during the World Cup.
Darren Sammy (West Indies)
Darren Sammy, the 27-year-old Windies skipper, is relatively inexperienced than some players in his side but has the leadership qualities required to captain a side at the World Cup. Sammy will get able support from Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Christopher Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan - the three most experienced members in the side.

The Netherlands captain Peter Borren had batted alongside Kiwis Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder during the Under-19 World Cup in 2001-02. That experience will come in handy when he takes the field during the World Cup
